PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF GAINESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN

Each year, a member of the senior class shall be determined to be the valedictorian and salutatorian of that senior class. This is a school-based award and is determined by procedures at the school level.  Selection of the valedictorian and salutatorian is made with the following procedure.  The valedictorian shall be the student who has obtained the highest grade point average according to the following guidelines.  The salutatorian shall be the student who has obtained the second highest grade point average as determined under the following guidelines. 1. The valedictorian and salutatorian must be students enrolled in the 12^th grade and who graduate with their cohort class. Credits must have been earned from an accredited school.
2. The student must have attended the school from which they will graduate for at least three consecutive semesters immediately preceding the determination of the class valedictorian and salutatorian.
3. The valedictorian must have earned the highest grade point average in his/her graduating class based on the school’s consistent use of a weighted scale.   The salutatorian must have earned the second highest grade point average in his/her graduating class.  The grade point average shall be determined by grades received in all classes taken from first semester grade 9 through first semester grade 12, which are the seven semesters of high school attendance. All grades will be calculated using the Gainesville High School grade point system.   The grade point average is calculated to the fourth place beyond the decimal point.
4. When the determination of valedictorian status is affected by a mathematical anomaly resulting from a student transferring from a different program of study, for example…. a non-block high school prior to the junior year, valedictorian consideration will be given for each student’s 9^th-12^th grade program of study.  In this instance, co-valedictorians will be named.
5. To be considered for valedictorian, salutatorian, students must graduate with their cohort class. All Gainesville high School graduation requirement policies must be followed and all grade transcripts accepted and verified by the high school principal and counselor.
6. The valedictorian and salutatorian will be calculated after the first semester of the 12^th grade.
7. The final resolution and decision in regard to the valedictorian and salutatorian is made on the school level with edupartners.cc administration and faculty as this is a school-level award.  The Board of Education does not have oversight of the valedictorian and salutatorian procedures.
